A Woman’s Face (1941)

After Anna Holm (Joan Crawford) has her badly scarred face made beautiful by Dr. Gustaf Segert (Melvyn Douglas), a plastic surgeon, her attitude toward life changes. She stops feeling justified in a life of crime, and strives to reform. She hopes she can achieve change with an aristocrat, Torsten Barring (Conrad Veidt), who found her attractive even before her operation.

Barring, however, only wants her to help him assure his in heritance by participating in one more crime, a murder. Blinded by love, she follows his plan and becomes the governess of Barring’s young nephew, Lars-Erik (Richard Nichols), the obstacle to Torsten inheriting the Barring fortune when old Magnus Barring (Albert Bassermann) dies.

Dr. Segert, fearing that he has made Anna an even more evil creature, is relieved when she thwarts Torsten’s attempt to kill the child after being unable to do it herself. Instead, she kills Torsten, and in court she is acquitted of murder. Anna has experienced a moral as well as a physical transformation, and she and Gustaf realize they are in love.
